Seeing the Essence

Seeing the Essence

An artistic statement:

There is more involved than just the mechanical recording of an image through a lens. It becomes a three-way alchemy of a sophisticated technical skill, an innate desire to make photographs under any condition, and a sense of knowing when to search for the mood and essence behind the physical image.

The subject must have a vibrant composition so it will live. It has to inspire a thought. It has to communicate a statement, this is spring, or this is fall, or this is love, or this is youth, or this is conflict. The picture must show these moods with the subject as its star performer.

My goal as a photojournalist is to portray these physical traits as a living spirit then, the subject assumes that magical, spiritual essence. Combined with the mood of the photograph, we then see past the likeness into something more significant.
